Feeling Unhappy And Stuck? Keys to Getting Un-Stuck and Moving Forward

September 21st, 2012 by Laura Longley

We all have times in our lives where we are unhappy and we know that we need to do something different in order to be happy, but we still stay stuck in that unpleasant place.

There are many reasons that we choose to stay in a state that doesn’t serve us. Sometimes we are aware of why we’re not changing, but other times we just feel stuck. We don’t know why or how to move forward.

Some common reasons that people get stuck and stay there include:

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • You don’t believe you’re ready
  • You don’t know what you want
  • You don’t know how to get what you want
  • The change you want / need to make feels overwhelming

Regardless of why you’re feeling stuck, there are a number of things you can do to get yourself moving. Sometimes the action you need to take is directly related to the reason that you are stuck. But many of the ways to resolve your stuckness can be applied in any situation.

1. Listen to your heart, it knows the way

No matter what has you staying in a situation that doesn’t serve you, it is key to spend some time alone, being still, and listen to your heart. We all have that inner voice of our higher self that knows the right answer. Ask yourself this question, “What would better serve me than this situation?” then listen for the response from the part of you that already knows.

2. Focus on what you can do right now

Many of the reasons we stay stuck involve projecting into the future. Certainly fear of failure and fear of success are all about what will happen if we go in a certain direction. By staying focused on the present you will reduce the fear of the future. This can also get you over the hurdle feeling overwhelmed.

3.  Accept that fear always goes with doing something new

Change is scary, even change that we want. As human beings our bias is towards maintaining the status quo. Whenever we step out of our comfort zone we feel at least a little fear. When you remember that you should feel some fear you can use that feeling as an acknowledgement that you are moving forward and getting un-stuck, instead of letting your fear keep you stagnant.
